His Britannic Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Peking telegraphed to the Officer Administering the Government on the 25th. instant requesting His Excellency to communicate to the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce the fellawing message in reply to their telegram of the 23rd. instant:-
*The reply to your previous telegram was
"sent to the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank and appears to have
"been forwarded by mail and not by telegram.
*I gather that the tax is not being enforced "and that H. B. M. Consul-General at Canton has not received "any reply to the protest which he addressedto the Governor- *-General on the 4th. instant. As the question has been referred *to the Foreign Office by the Goverment of India, I cannot take *any further action until I receive instructions.*
